To my Dear and Valued Patients
It has come to our attention that certain Delta Dental Insurance plans have “engaged in highly objectionable practices” in their explanation of benefits statements (EOB’s) that threaten the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. The ethically inappropriate behavior demonstrated a lack of professional integrity on the part of Delta Dental. Quoting an article published in the September 4, 2017 edition of the ADA News by David Burger, what Delta Dental’s practice amounts to is a clear interference in the doctor-patient relationship.
The ADA objects to these two Delta practices regarding claims for services by nonparticipating dentists. The first Delta practice involves some Delta plan EOB’s exhorting patients to abandon their dentist in favor of a participating provider. The second objectionable practice happens when a Delta plan, on the advice of a licensed dentist employed by Delta, disallows a certain procedure performed by the providing dentist, deeming it medically unnecessary. “This unequivocal medical opinion is objectionable as it is rendered by an insurance company dentist who has not directly examined or communicated with the patient and in simple terms is practicing dentistry by mail.” “This constitutes a gross interference in the doctor-patient relationship.”
In a letter to Delta Dental by the ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs the ADA has insisted on quick remedies to resolve these faulty practices. Delta has acknowledged receipt of the ADA’s letter.
