Since he was a young boy growing up in Des Moines, Iowa Dr. Graig Brown liked to fix things with his hands. From slicing phone cable wires together with his father to repairing the winter salt eroded rust holes in his first car, Dr. Brown learned many tasks, developed many skills and found the joy of attention to detail inherent to his work. He realized at a young age that he wanted to be a dentist and work with his hands.
At 13 years old he was washing dishes at Reed’s Ice Cream Restaurant. When he was 15 years old he worked as a golf caddy at The Wakonda Golf & Country Club in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked in the golf pro shop as a bag room attendant through high school and college. Dr. Brown played basketball for Lincoln High School and was a player on the 1975 Iowa AAA Basketball Championship team. Dr. Brown captured a spirit of perseverance and developed a commitment to excellence at a young age.
Dr. Brown began practicing in 1984 as a dentist in the US Air Force, and practiced ten years prior to his Graduate Specialty Training in Periodontology. Dr. Brown has been known to say that his graduate residency training was one of the most difficult things he has ever done and he is very grateful to the USAF for providing him with such a valuable opportunity to train with the best in the field of Periodontics.
Dr. Graig Brown is the father of two adult sons Jonathan (Lt.,US Navy) and Joshua that he shares with his wife of 37 years Jean. Dr. Brown and his family love to ski, play tennis, golf, travel and follow their favorite college athletic teams, The Arizona Wildcats, The Iowa Hawkeyes, The Iowa State Cyclones, The Drake Bulldogs and the NAU Lumberjacks. Dr. Brown serves his family, his friends, his community and his patients as a Tucson periodontist with the same level of passion and commitment he has given to everything he has ever done.
Dr. Brown is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology & Dental Implant Surgery. Board Certified Certification as a Diplomate demonstrates a special and unique accomplishment that can require an additional two to three years from post graduate training. Today only fifty percent of practicing Periodontists are Diplomates of the AAP.
Board Certification is a voluntary process that provides an intensive independent evaluation of a periodontist’s education and clinical comprehension
Dental Training
Dr. Graig Brown received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry in 1984. He practiced General Dentistry in the US Air Force for ten years prior to his specialty training in Periodontics.
Dr. Graig Brown completed his specialty training in Periodontics in 1996, where he earned his Master of Science in Periodontics from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio and his Certificate in Periodontics from Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He successfully challenged the American Board of Periodontology to become a Board Certified Diplomate in 1997.
Dr. Brown served seventeen years on active duty with the United States Air Force. He retired after twenty two years of active duty and reservist activity from the Arizona Air National Guard in 2005. He received the following recognition’s while serving his country:
- Air Force Meritorious Service Medal
- Air Force Commendation Medal, Second Oak Leaf Cluster
- Air Force Achievement Medal
- Dr. Brown is a Veteran
Dr. Brown is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, Arizona Dental Association, American Board of Periodontology, and American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Brown has placed over 8000 dental implants since completing his surgical training in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery in 1996.
He also served as adjunct faculty at Pima Community College in the Department of Dental Hygiene/Allied Health Professions for ten years. Dr. Brown currently serves as Attending Periodontist/Specialist Consultant for the Tucson General Practice Residency, (AEGD) of NYU Langone Health, New York, New York.
